The figure in the ruffed collar and trilby hat is that of Pocahontas, (1595-1617). She was a North American Indian princess from Virginia who married an Englishman, Captain John Rolfe in 1613; he hailed from this small Norfolk village. Pocahontas was educated by the English settlers in the colony of Jamestown, Virginia and moved to England with her husband where she became known as Lady Rebecca. She was presented at the court of King James and Queen Anne. Before boarding the ship on their way back to Virginia in 1617, Pocahontas became ill with consumption and died at the young age of twenty-two. She is buried in Gravesend, England where she passed away.
